27 February 2008

valentine’s day came and went with little flourish. i’m thankful for that. its not even that i don’t like valentines day, i just don’t like the hype.

writing has been more scarce lately as i’ve been concentrating more and more on getting myself sound and secure financially and otherwise. it seems to me that the more i focus on the pragmatic and rational, the less i want to write. it’s a necessary evil, i suppose.

i think influences lately have been getting less and less tangible. i haven’t been looking at someone on the street and writing a poem about it. rather, i’ve been thinking about faith and politics and love, bigger, deeper subjects, and writing about those. it gets me more involved with the emotional aspect of the writing, but i don’t want to lose the impulsive, knee-jerk kind of writing either. some of those kinds of pieces have been the most interesting and intriguing. i can look at my own poetry and analyze it as though it’s not my own poetry.

with the decision of a candidate for both political parties drawing nearer, i feel i should state that this is a non-partisan blog with a partisan writer. i have many thoughts and beliefs going into this election and i have support that i am rallying behind one candidate, but you won’t hear about it here.

things that have influenced me of late:

dogs
coffee
school (or lack thereof)
jobs
traffic
love
dying
frustration with others
my sister
nature valley fruit and nut granola bars
pasta with red sauce
my late great grandmother
futurism
blending faith and politics
not blending faith and politics

so there you have it. an update about the twists and turns that constitute my current thoughts and influences on writing. i hope february has been splendid and i will be sure to update with new material soon.

see you in march.
